When people think of New York, they invariably think of Manhattan Island and New York City. John Lennon once said ?If I'd lived in Roman times, I'd have lived in Rome. Where else? Today America is the Roman Empire and New York City is Rome itself.? It today ranks as the fourth largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 20 million people.
But the state also has a great wealth of farmland, woodland areas, mountains, rivers and rural towns as well. People often refer to the rest of New York as ?upstate New York? to differentiate it from the greater NYC metropolitan area. From the Catskill mountains to Niagara Falls, there are an abundance of attractions to discover in this remarkable state.
